Police are appealing for information after a man suffered serious injuries during a road rage attack in Farington.

Around 11.35am on Sunday (January 12) a man in his 40s was driving a white Vauxhall Corsa on Stanifield Lane.

As he drove towards the traffic lights at the junction with Centurion Way, the man noticed a white Ford Transit van approaching from behind. The van was being driven close to the Corsa, with the driver beeping his horn.

As the victim stopped at the traffic lights his car door was opened and he was dragged from the vehicle by two men.

He was attacked with a small wooden rounders bat suffering fractures to his nose and face, as well as a broken leg. He had his wallet, mobile phone and a voucher for TK Maxx stolen during the assault.

Both men returned to the van before making off from the scene, with the driver later treated at hospital.

One of the attackers is described as having ginger hair.

Detectives are appealing for information and are urging anyone who saw what happened, or who might have dashboard mounted camera footage of the incident, to come forward.

Det Con Deborah Parkinson, of Chorley CID, said: “We are investigating a road rage attack in Farington which has left a man seriously injured.

“This was a vicious and unprovoked assault and we are appealing for information to help find those responsible.

“Detectives would like to hear from anyone who saw this incident or the vehicles involved, or anyone who may have been driving in the area at the relevant time and who may have captured any dash cam footage of what took place. We would also urge anyone with relevant CCTV footage to come forward."

If anyone has any information about this incident please call (01257) 246182 or email 3935@lancashire.pnn.police.uk quoting log 1434 of January 12.

Alternatively, should you wish to provide information anonymously you can do so via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

This sounds more like a robbery than a road range incident. It does beg the question however, just what kind of world are we living in.

I and all my family drive with our doors locked. A police inspector friend advised me years ago that this was good practice, also many cars automatically do this.

The more I read this the more I think was this a targeted attack?, had he upset someone?, is there anything else they took off him that he is not mentioning?. Maybe it’s hard for me to believe people could be like this at random or pick an average guy in a corsa to rob but he may have upset someone on the road there are a lot of crazies out there.

This is always a good idea. I have been to lots of countries and am always aware of who is behind me, whether driving or on foot. If stopped in a queue of traffic I always leave enough room in front of me to pull out. When in Australia a number of years ago I was in a line of traffic with three cars behind me when I notice that another vehicle was joining the queue at speed. I quickly pulled out of the line and avoided being shunted into which makes me wonder why anyone tailgates.
